JOHANN MERRICH
Johann Merrich (b. 1981) is an Italian electronic musician and composer active since 2000.
She started her sound researches by using her loyal Yamaha AN200 within the electro-noise duo Hm? formed with Genecyst (2000 - 2006). Thanks to Hm?'s performances she begins to develop her idea of an experimental and conceptual music. In 2008 she releases her first solo album USSR vs Paradise (in six movements) for the Italian netlabel Vuoto. One year after, in 2009, she recored her second solo Fricadelique! How to be a flower-power nihilist for the Russian netlabel Clinical Archives. In 2011 she performed for the 54 Biennale d'Arte di Venezia (Ooslo Floating Pavilion, San Servolo Island; Illuminations Closure Party, Giardini della Biennale) and she co-funded electronicgirls.org. In 2012 she recorded 7 Tone-floats for a Self Destruction for electronicgirls, moving her taste to low-fi beat and punk sounds. Passionate connoisseur of electronic music history, in 2012 she published her first book about women in electronic sounds Le Pioniere della musica elettronica (Auditorium Edizioni, Milan). Together with Ilaria Pasqualetto, Giacomo Trevisan and Chironomia, she made the theatre pièce "Annusavamo fiori di fibra ottica". In the same year, she started to write articles on electronic music for "InSound". Thanks to the meeting with the performing art duo Andrigo&Aliprandi, from 2012 she become involved in the production of music for dance and performances, writing pieces for dance shows (Libere di Ricominciare - 2014, choreographed by Marianna Andrigo; Le Bistrot des dames - 2015, choreographed by Marianna Andrigo) and Vertical Dance (Cubo for Eventi Verticali - 2015 and Sostanza d'Ombra for Vertical Waves Project - 2014). With Andrigo&Aliprandi she funded in 2014 LIVE ARTS CULTURES and she's now curator of the cultural association's musical projects. She deepened her researches following seminars lead by Theo Teardo (Fondazione Giorgio Cini - 2014), playing in Cesare Ronconi's Tornare al Cuore theatre action (Forte Marghera - 2015), and in Pauline Oliveros' Environmental Dialogues (Benedetto Marcello Conservatory, Venice - 2015). |
Her interest in orchestral music moved her to write verbal scores: Golden Min., the Fantastic and Irrational Number performed by the group 21 is the first glimpse of that interest.
Soon after, she become involved in the principles of Stockhausen's Intuitive Music; by following that methodology, she writes scores for the ensemble The Expanding Universe of Al-Joberal Chirolechi such as The Expanding Metal Casting, Labyrinth, Intuitive Music N°1, Ananke - Music for the Fates, playing with her colleagues - Aldo Aliprandi, Bertrand Rossa, LECRI, Marianna Andrigo - around France, Italy, Bosnia and Croatia. Her music has been required from several artists, such as Sissa Micheli (photographer; trailer's soundtrack for "Knödelperformance", Stadtmuseum, Bruneck - 2012), Beniko Tanaka (performer; "Chiaraluna" and "Claralua", Shadow Theatre Performance premiered at the Marionette Museum, Lisbon - 2015), Gabriela Stoica (painter; sound installation during the exhibition "Mirror Mirror Who I am?", Meru Gallery, Iasi, Romania - 2015), Corinne Mazzoli (artist; sound installations for her "Sala Gioccchi" project - 2013). Merrich is an active researcher on the effort of women in electronic music. She loves to spread the knowledge on experimental music history through dj sets, workshops and lectures. She is deeply in love with her synthesizers (Korg MS20 Mini, Yamaha An & DX200, Korg Poly800, Korg Volca Beat). Her last work for electronic orchestra and dance, Silver River, has been premiered at S.a.L.E. Docks, Venice, in January 2016. Her latest album "A bigger splash into the Unknown" will be available from 20th March, produced by electronicgirls. |
